Town officials gathered Friday afternoon to honor a group of parents (Dr. Leora Horwitz, Dr. Setul Pardanani, and Anthony and Caitriona Perna) who heroically came together to save a fellow parent who went into cardiac arrest during a workshop at Hamilton Avenue School.

"Crowd care, that's the key word here, crowd care that happened," says Superintendent of Schools Dr. William McKersie. "We didn't practice for this, but we can prepare for this."

The parents were prepared and quickly used the automated external defibrillator (AED) that had been installed by the Greenwich Emergency Medical Service (GEMS).

"We are a heart safe community because of the work that GEMS has done over the course of many years in education and in distribution of the AED," says First Selectman Peter Tesei. "So I think it is a testament to you and all of your heroic actions and a testament to the fact that we have such high quality emergency medical services here in this town."

And following sentiments of the Capital Budget hearing held earlier in the week, First Selectman Tesei emphasized the importance of expressing the value of an organization like GEMS.

"It is important for those in decision making positions to hear from all of you the importance of supporting and funding Greenwich Emergency Medical Services," says First Selectman Tesei.
