How The Board Of Ed. Election Works

A Basic Guide To The Coming Election

When Stamford voters head to the polls on Tuesday, November 8, they will be voting for candidates running for all the City's elected boards. It's Relevant will be providing simple overviews of who is running for the Boards of Education, Finance and Representatives and how each election works.

Board Of Education Overview

Six candidates will be running for three seats. In many Board of Education elections, state election rules which require that no more than two-thirds of the Board can be from the same party would be a factor. In this case, because the six seats not up for election are held by three Republicans (Jerry Pia, Lorraine Olson and John Leydon) and three Democrats (Polly Rauh, Geoff Alswanger and Rich Lyons) those rules have no impact on this year's election.

Board members are elected to three-year terms on a staggered basis. Each member represents the entire City as a whole and not a district or a region within the City.

One of the Board's key responsibilities is finding and hiring a Superintendent of Schools and all other supporting administrative staff for each school and for the Superintendent’s office – a key factor in the year's election as the City is currently searching for a new Superintendent.

The candidates for the three open seats are:

Jackie Heftman (D) incumbent

Julia Wade (D) incumbent

Gary Klein (D)

June Corridor (R)

Karen Murphy (I) (Endorsed by the Republicans)

Michael Bayonne (R)
