Athletes from Special Olympics Connecticut celebrated a valuable partnership in Fairfield Friday with sandwiches and smiles.

Jersey Mike's Subs gave away a free sub to anyone making a donation of at least one dollar to the charity.

"We passed out thousands and thousands of coupons all throughout CT.  And we just do an honor system.. 1 donation is all we're looking for.  We've had people come in and do $20 donation, $5 donation, even fifty cents, it all adds up." Said Sean Solheim, General Manager of Jersey Mike's Fairfield.

The fundraising event for Special Olympics Connecticut took place at six Jersey Mike's locations in Fairfield County, and giving back is a key ingredient of the culture throughout the Jersey Mike's chain.

"That's one of the reasons that I started with this company is the fact that they do all this fundraising and giving back to the community.  We do fundraisers here every day of the week and when I heard we were getting involved with Special Olympics I thought 'wow that's awesome'" said Solheim.

And the Special Olympics Connecticut athletes and volunteers who came out to enjoy a meal together say the bonds that Special Olympics creates are just as valuable as the sports and competition.

"Special Olympics is not all about sports, it's all about social inclusion getting out and having food and eating – as you can see everyone is having a good time behind me."  Said Jay Andronaco, Director of Partnerships and Corporate Relations, Special Olympics CT.

" All the guys you see here are friends of mine.  We compete together, laugh together, party like nuts together... you name it!" said Mike Hedrick.

"I personally can tell you it changes lives, it's changed my life." added Andronaco

"Special Olympics has presented me once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.  I was given the honor of playing in a PGA pro-am event at Congressional (in Maryland).   Without SO, who knows where I would be?" said Hedrick.

"We couldn't do what we do without money, so without Jersey Mikes Subs and so many other fine companies and individuals donating to SOCT it wouldn't be possible, we couldn't do what we do without kind people like them.  We're doing this at 6 stores this week and in their new Derby store opening so they've really bent over backwards for us.  As I say to so many people I work with, if you support us, we're going to support you back and that's why you see so many athletes here today." said Andronaco.
