"Sexual violence seriously effects our youth with 1 out of every 3 girls and 1 out of every 6 boys being sexually abused before the age of 16," said First Selectman Peter Tesei, proclaiming April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month in Lower Fairfield County.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and on Thursday morning, the Center for Sexual Assault Crisis Counseling & Education (The Center) kicked off its month long campaign, raising awareness about assault and the importance of prevention.

Ivonne Zucco, Executive Diretor of the Center said, "We don't only work with the survivors of sexual assault or do prevention in the schools but we also work at the State level to change laws that may be outdated and to change proposals that may be out of touch with what survivors really need."

"I think it is really rare when a Board's mission is to put themselves out of business and ultimately that is what our board would like to see happen," said Gayle Weinstein, First Selectman of the Town of Weston and Vice Presient of the Center's Board of Directors. "...where we live in a world that is free of sexual assault where we don't need to provide these kinds of services. But until then, we need to reach out into our community and work hand in hand to try to do what we can to eliminate it."

Over the last year alone, The Center provided direct services to nearly 14,000 people through its hotline, crisis counseling/advocacy and prevention education programs.

In recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, The Center will be hosting tabling events throughout the month of April to raise awareness at area high schools as well as at UConn Stamford and Norwalk Community College.
