The Center Gains Support for Prevention Education Programs

Receives grant from Community Fund of Darien

Stamford, CT | Added on March 24, 2015 At 10:00 PM

The Center for Sexual Assault Crisis Counseling & Education (The Center) received a $2,500 from The Community Fund of Darien this month to support its sexual violence prevention education programs. Over the last year alone, The Center’s sexual violence prevention education programs served over 13,000 people in Lower Fairfield County.

“The Center is excited to partner with The Community Fund of Darien,” Ann McCarthy, Director of Development & Communications at The Center, said in a statement. “We are honored that they see our prevention education program as a good fit with their funding goal of youth success and are grateful for their support.”
The Center’s prevention education programs aim to protect youth in Lower Fairfield County and reduce the incidence of sexual violence in communities. The free programs are available in English and Spanish to students in kindergarten through college. As children alone cannot protect themselves, The Center provides prevention education to teachers, law enforcement and medical professionals, and parents.
“We strive to eliminate the risk factors that result in sexual violence and empower community members to report abuse,” sid Jessica Buchanan, The Center’s Prevention and Outreach Coordinator.  “Our educators are trained to connect with youth in a meaningful and engaging way. The Center offers eight different workshops that are not only age-appropriate but delve deeper into specific topics around sexual violence, as required by our individual audiences.”
Last week, The Center received disclosures from four public school students who attended their prevention education programs accodring to the organization. “We wish that all children were safe from abuse and that there was no need for disclosure, but that is not our reality,” said Buchanan. “The disclosures show that The Center’s education programs have a positive impact not only around sexual violence prevention but in linking victims to the support they need. Our partnership with The Community Fund of Darien helps make our prevention education work possible.”
