One possible solution to the parking issues in Downtown Stamford - car-sharing - is now a reality.

"Zipcar is a car sharing company the enables simple, responsible urban living by providing wheels when you want them," said Anthony Fatone Jr., Regional General Manager for New York, New Jersey and Connecticut for Zipcar

The City of Stamford's Director of Economic Development Thomas Madden said, "You have a lot of young people moving into the city and they don't own cars. Zipcar provides them with that opportunity to have access to cars. It really works into the whole sharing culture that you are starting to see pop up in Stamford itself."

Zipcar has stationed vehicles at the Landmark Square office complex in downtown Stamford as well as Harbor Point Gateway Garage, with plans to roll out more cars throughout the city.

"We saw Stamford as a very green community and a very trendy leading edge community. A lot of millenials that are moving to cities like Stamford believe in a world where we reduce the amount of car ownership," said Fatone.

Fatone says zipcars will help alleviate parking frustrations in the city.  "For every one zipcar that is on the road, it reduces 15-20 cars that are driving around. It helps reduce congestion and time spent looking for parking spots because we have a pre arranged parking spot for our member."

"We are in the process in negotiating putting them into the Bell Street Garage as well as on street spots throughout the city. We are going to tie them right next to a lot of our different developments. We are also negotiating with some of the new apartment buildings going in to have zipcars available within those buildings as well as some of our major corporations in their parking garages," said Madden.

Bringing this car sharing program to Stamford was originally proposed in the City's 10 Year Master Plan.
