Another name will soon be added to the list of over 60 individuals who have given back to Stamford. Gene Rubino is the 2014 City of Stamford Citizen of the Year.

"The Mayor opened the door and that was not what I was expecting," said Rubino.

Rubino received the honor among family, friends and past honorees Monday evening at Stamford's Government Center. A native of Stamford and a graduate of Stamford High School, Rubino established Plaza Realty and Management in 1970.

"Since starting the business, I felt it was my responsibility to give back," said Rubino.

Since 1945, the Fred Robbins Post 142 has sponsored the award on behalf of the City, honoring men and women who have served the community.

Richard Redniss, Co-Chair of the Citizen of the Year Event said, "We think it set a great example for the rest of the community and the children in the community. What we have been doing for the last 11 year is give out scholarships and honor veterans."

Rubino helped the Stamford Boys and Girls Club raise $3.5 million to build a new facility and raised more that $1.75 million for renovations of the Stamford YMCA in the 1990s.

Excellence is also reflected in Gene’s many decades of community service in Stamford. He has supported  youth throughout Stamford and has served as Director of the Stamford YMCA, President and Director of the Exchange Club, Vice President and Director of the Stamford Boys and Girls Club, and Director of the American Red Cross. He has held executive positions at the Italian Center and Yerwood Center and has contributed his services in successful fund raising drives for Trinity Catholic High School, the Stamford Boys and Girls Club and Saint Joseph's Hospital.

Currently, Gene is serving on the Yale University School of Medicine Eye Center Advisory Board.

Mayor David Martin says honoring people like Gene is a reflection of the City. "I think it is as much for us to remember and recognize that in a way these individuals stand out and are representative of all the good people in the community."

"I feel very humbled by it," said Rubino. "I've known several people who have received the award and I am very humbled to be in that company."

The 70th Annual Citizen of the Year dinner will be held in April 2015.
