Injuries may creep in, require rest

A little more than a week ago, runners from all around the world came together for the New York city marathon.

Now days later, some may still feel the after-effect of that run.

“It hurts when you run and now it hurts when you walk too," said Rebecca Petersen of Stamford Hospital's Orthopedic and Spine Institute.

 Swelling, muscle cramps and stress fractures are just a few of the injuries that may arise.  They might not immediately appear at the finish line, but Peteresen says warning signs most definitely do.

"Your body is pretty smart when telling you things aren't going right and giving you signals like a pain in the knee or a pain in the hip or something," said Petersen.

But for some runners, taking a break isn’t easy.

"After running a marathon and running everyday for five months, not being able to run for 3 weeks you go pretty stir crazy," said Lance Svendsen. 

Lance Svendsen is an avid runner, who has suffered his fair share of injures.

"My IT band inflammed in my knee," he said.

The doctor ordered Lance to take three weeks off from running, which magically did the trick.

"That's not always the answer people want to hear that sometimes taking a break from your activity can do wonders," said Petersen.

Now before you have to take that unwanted break, there are some things runners can  do to better protect themselves. Peterersen suggests wearing compression stocking that promotes blood flow, a proper nutrition and low-impact work outs like walking.
