A comprehensive Concussion Center is now open at Stamford Hospital’s Orthopedic &Spine Institue.

It’s one of the first in Fairfield County. The new center provides education, diagnosis and treatment on one of the most common and often times undetected type of injury.

The center specializes in individualized care. Christina Kunec, the team’s neuropsychologist, performs a clinical interview in which she learns about the patient’s family and medical history.  She also administers cognitive testing.

Awareness for concussions has grown tremendously over the years, especially here in Connecticut.  Recently, the General Assembly passed legislation regarding concussion prevention in young atheletes. This new Center hopes to add to that cause.

Each year, the U.S. Emergency Departments treat more than 170 thousand concussions.  The majority of patients recover in a week to ten days, but all agree proper treatment is key for that to happen.
