Virginia's House of Hope celebrated the end of summer with their second annual Polo Benefit for Hope at the Greenwich Polo Club.

Sophia Gangei, Executive Director of Virginia's House of Hope said, "We've had pretty much everything donated for the event so that we could really focus on raising money for the scholarships specifically for the students."

Proceeds for the event went to the organization's Tugboat Program, training young men & women for maritime careers in Connecticut and New York.

"We were able to create the Tugboat Program which is the equivalent to a maritime college education course, condensed into an extremely rigorous three week program," said Gangei.

Established in 2008, the Tugboat Program offers both hands on and classroom training. Upon graduation, each student is equipped and certified to work as a tugboat deckhand, with the possibility of becoming a tugboat officer.

Virginia’s House of Hope arranges for every student to obtain an employment opportunity. The cost to Virginia’s House of Hope per student in the Tugboat Program is approximately $7,000. Events like the Polo Benefit make sure there is no tuition fee for the students.

"It's one of the industries that not a lot of people know about. We teach them about it, they learn about it and some of them are so passionate about it once the program is complete, it just becomes a great career for them," added Gangei.
