Peruvian American Congressman Carlos Bruce was welcomed by the Stamford community with open arms Thursday. Invited to the City by the Peruvian Community Center of Connecticut, the congressman was greeted with an honorary key to the city by Mayor David Martin.

The Congressman has served in many different roles in Peru, including Minister of State for the President from 2001 to 2002. He represented Lima as Congressman from 2006 to 2011 and was re-elected to serve from 2011 to 2016. Known for his fight for same sex unions in Peru, Congressman Bruce came out in May as the first openly gay elected official in the country.

Over the next few days, Congressman Bruce will tour Stamford, participating in community events and celebrating Peruvian Independence month. The Congressman says he’s looking forward to connecting with Stamford residents and strengthening ties between countries.
