“The word got out that I’m fishing lobsters.  And, a lot of people have gone to the restaurant and sampled them.  And, they can’t get enough of them,” he said.

For the first time in years, Connecticut’s lobster catch from the Long Island Sound is on the upswing. And, that’s bringing a rush of orders to one very busy lobster fisherman this holiday weekend.

“I’ve been fishing lobster for 38 years and when people want lobster they call lobster Mike.  That’s what they call me,” said Mike Kalaman.

Mike Kalaman is docked here out of Norwalk. Today, he is recovering from a nine and a half hour fishing trip, catching these 75 lobsters.

"As you can see, they're running quite nice," he described.

And, they're all to be sold for the July 4th weekend.

"We get a lot of repeat customers because these lobsters are never tanked," he said.  "So, you are essentially buying them from the boat.  They are in a moderate price range: anywhere from $4.50 to $10.00 a pound.  The yield has been incredible this year and I am very happy to say that," he said.

He calls the catch a pleasant surprise, referencing the recent history here in the Sound, where the lobster population has been dwindling for years.

"The old timers have this theory that when you have cold winters and the waters get really cold and it just purifies the environment," he siad.

And, that's a big relief for Connecticut’s lobster lovers. Kalaman telling me July 4th already ranks as his busiest holiday, saying he receives triple the orders than usual. And looking at the numbers, it’s not hard to believe.

The national Retail Federation estimating Americans will dish out six-point-two billion dollars on food this July 4th.

Luckily this year, lobster from Long Island Sound can be back on the table.
