Four years ago, Michael Pavia was sworn in as Stamford's 30th Mayor.

"I would categorize the first day or two in office as a whirlwind," said Mayor Michael Pavia, who chose not to run for another term.

Pavia says he took on the city's top job with honor and pride, succeeding now Governor Dannel Malloy.

"My thing has always been if I take on something, I have to do it as well as I possibly can," said Pavia.

Serving the city where he grew up, where his children and grandchildren live, Pavia says it was his goal to make Stamford a safe place.

Stamford is the safest city in New England and 11th in the country.

During Pavia's term, Stamford was hit by Hurricane Irene and Superstorm Sandy.

In 2009, Pavia says another big topic was jobs.

Out of that came the Mayor's Youth Employment Summer Program -- which gives Stamford High School students the chance to intern with city businesses and nonprofits.

Pavia got his first job out of college in Stamford. In 1976, he was the first executive director of environmental protection.  He then served as police commissioner, public works director, and on the board of representatives before becoming mayor.

But there's one theme that's remained constant for the mayor through out the years.

He says it's been an honor to serve the people of Stamford, a place he calls "one great city."

Pavia says he plans to teach at a local university, and return to the real estate side of his business, Pavia Development.

[Stamford's Mayor-elect David Martin, will officially take office Dec. 1 and be sworn in publicly Monday, Dec. 2.]
