Stamford, CT | Added on October 04, 2013 At 11:16 AM

The First Presbyterian Church of Stamford, also known as The Fish Church for it's external resemblance to a fish, will have its second "Tour Day" this Saturday, Oct. 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event is part of national Tour Day, organized by the Documentation and Conservation of buildings, sites, and neighborhoods of the ModernMovement, also known as Docomomo. There will be guided tours of the church and a demonstration of the acoustics using the church's organ by the Minister of Music, JimWetherald.

At 1 p.m. in the chapel Kyle May, principal at Abrahams May Architects and Editor in Chief of CLOG, will moderate a panel discussion about the architectural, structuraland religious significance of The Fish Church.

Jane Love, member and Ruling Elder of the church, said the sanctuary of the building contains over 20,000 pieces of stained glass, describing it as a "jeweledmasterpiece." Love said the church is not only magnificent to see, but to hear as well.

The Fish Church was built by architect Wallace K. Harrison, who was Nelson Rockefeller's personal architect and the lead architect of well-known structures such as theUnited Nations Headquarters in New York City and Lincoln Center. Harrison is said to have asked “Have you ever thought what it would be like to live inside a giantsapphire?”, and to have created an answer to that question with the Fish Church.

Docomomo is a non-profit international organization consisting of national chapters in 59 countries. Every year, the Docomomo U.S. regional chapters hold a Tour Day"featuring architectural tours of modern buildings, interiors, neighborhoods and landscapes designed in the United States," according to the Docomomo Tour Day pressrelease. Tour Day 2013 will mark the seventh annual Tour Day for Docomomo's U.S. chapter, and will also feature a tour of The Glass House on Elm Street in New Canaan.

Stamford's First Presbyterian Church is located at 1101 Bedford St. Tours are free of charge.
