Most appointments to Norwalk's various commissions are accepted at Common Council meetings without a word.

That was not the case Tuesday night, as William Dunne's appointment to the city's planning commission resulted in a conversation about politics.

"He's attacked members of our caucus individually," said Democrat David Watts, referring to Dunne.

Ultimately, Dunne was appointed by an 8-4 vote.  Only two Democrats, Matt Miklave and Bruce Kimmel, voted yes.

"He's called us clowns," Watts added.  "That's his right as a citizen to speak his mind.  But those were personal attacks."

Watts referring to public letters Dunne has written, which Dunne doesn't deny.  But he says it's unfair to judge him before he gets started.

"The activities of the planning commission deal with pretty much non-partisan issues," he said.

"He's engaged, he knows what's going on," Kimmel said.  "He will do the right thing for Norwalk."

"I'm disappointed to hear people assume [Dunne] will not do something," said Republican councilman David McCarthy.  "There is no evidence to suggest that."

Watts said he just hopes Dunne does not use the planning commission platform to continue to write political letters.

"I know the way the world works," Dunne said.  "I want to see Norwalk prosper."

The planning commission, among other things, is responsible for implementing the city's conservation and development plan.
