National Prescription Take-Back Day

Residents can dispose unwanted, expired drugs

Stamford, CT | Added on September 26, 2012 At 04:53 PM

Stamford is joining cities and towns across the country in a take-back initiative.

The National Drug Enforcement Administration has scheduled its fifth nation-wide Prescription Drug Take-Back Day for people to safely dispose of unwanted or unused medications.

“We are working with Stamford police to help strengthen prevention of substance abuse,” said Ingrid Gillespie, the Director of the Fairfield County Regional Action Council.

The collaborative group supports local initiatives, and is a part of the Connecticut Prevention Network.  Members of the organization will join police officers on-site during the take-back program.

“It reduces access to unwanted medication and is environmentally disposed of,” said Gillespie.

On Saturday Sept. 29, residents can drop off medications for safe disposal at two locations in Stamford from 10 a.m. to 2p.m.  One is the Police Department Headquarters, 805 Bedford St., and the other is the Scofieldtown Road Recycling Center, 612 Scofieldtown Rd.

The Darien and Norwalk Police Departments are also participating.

According to the DEA, during its last take-back program in April, Americans turned in over 550,000 pounds of unwanted or expired drugs at over 5,600 sites.  After the DEA conducted its first four take-back programs, it found that state, local, and tribal law enforcement and community partners have removed over 1.5 million pounds of medication from circulation combined.
