"You get to walk with your friends and all the police officers block off the roads and help to keep you safe," said a Columbus Magnet School student.

About 175 students from Columbus Magnet School made their journey to school Friday morning for the second time this school year.

"I decided to do it again because it's really fun because we get to walk over the bridge and we see a lot of things."

"We have a really nice turnout," said Kaitlin Latham, Health Education Associate with The Norwalk Health Department. "Columbus is great at getting everyone empowered and getting together."

It's the school's largest organized walk, with students from grades K through 5 participating alongside several parent volunteers.

"We really need for kids to really think healthy globally," said Columbus Magnet School Principal Emily Lopez. "So we're trying to encourage them to eat healthy, we're trying to encourage them to be active."

The Norwalk Health Department hosts walk to school days twice a year and recently more and more Norwalk schools have decided to participate.

"This is a great way to promote walking, promote being healthy and exercising and it's a great way to get the parents and school students involved together," said Latham.

"You get lots of exercise when we walk at least a little bit a day," said another student.

"It is exercise for you and it stops polluting the air from cars and trucks," said another student.
