“U DRIVE. U TEXT. U PAY.” State police are making that message loud and clear, giving it an extra push for National Distracted Driving Awareness month. If you’re on the phone, they’ll be looking for you, so think twice and put the distractions away before getting behind the wheel.

The Stamford and Norwalk Police Departments were just a few of many in the State to launch the anti-texting enforcement campaign today, which will run through the end of April.  Police will be cracking down on drivers texting or talking on their phones, issuing fines ranging from $150 to $500.  In 2013, more than 3,000 people were killed and over 420,000 were injured in car crashes involving distracted drivers.

“Texting and driving requires motorists to take their eyes off the road, hands off the wheel, and mind off the task of driving. It creates the proverbial ‘perfect storm’ for a crash, and no one has the right to put another person’s life at risk like that,” Norwalk Police Chief Thomas Kulhawik said in a statement.

“For those who say that driving and texting is an epidemic, we believe enforcement of our hand-held mobile phone ban law is part of the cure,” said Stamford Sgt. Andrew Gallagher.

Connecticut remains the only state in the nation to receive special distracted driving prevention funds, awarded over 4.6 million dollars in the last two years for campaigns like this one.
