Thanks to generous donations patient visits to the new Bauer Emergency center at Norwalk Hospital are expected to be speedy, and more efficient with enhanced technology.

"It's really been a long and arduous time, but it has come together," said George Bauer.

The hospital cut the ribbon on its new 32,000 square foot Bauer Emergency Care facility Tuesday night, while celebrating the $2.5 million gift of support from longtime Norwalk Hospital donors George and Carol Bauer of Wilton.

"An emergency room is just something that when you need it, you need it," said Bauer. "Thank goodness many of us don't need it a lot, but when we do, we do. That's been a special interest of ours."

The facility, located in the hospital's new Anne and Harold McGraw Jr. Center, will soon provide state-of-the art emergency care and double Norwalk Hospital's current treatment space, which receives more than 50,000 patient visits per year.

"It means a lot to this community," said Norwalk Hospital President Michael Daglio. "We have a very high utilization of emergency services, and the community really needs a bigger space, a more private space for them to receive their care. That's what this project means to us in the new emergency department that we're opening tonight."

The center is equipped with treating and assessing needs from a sprained ankle to severe trauma emergencies quickly and efficiently with 40 new private patient-care rooms. The new Level II Trauma Center contains a new rooftop helipad for severe cases and other technological advancements to expedite and improve treatment.

"One area I'm particularly excited about is our critical care or fast-track area, which is going to be for our basic emergencies, where our goal is to get the patients taken care of, treated and released within an hour," said Ari Perkins, M.D. acting chairman of Norwalk Hospital Dept. of Emergency Medicine.

The Bauers have served at Norwalk Hospital for over 35 years and have  also named the hospital's Jeffery Peter Bauer Newborn Intensive Care Unit and the hospital's Carol Bauer Nursing Scholarship Fund.

"They've been great friends of the hospital for a long time," said Daglio. "Carol Bauer has been a Chaplain here at the hospital. She's spent a lot of time in our emergency departments with our community, with our patients. They're just a wonderful couple, they've been great friends to the institution and very generous in their contributions."

The Bauer Emergency Center will open within the next several weeks and the entire McGraw Center is scheduled for full completion this summer.
