November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month and Stamford Hospital's Dr. Ebright says lung cancer is the nation’s leading cause of cancer deaths each year for both men and women.

"The issue with lung cancer is that it's usually discovered after a patient develops symptoms," says Dr. Michael Ebright, Director of Thoracic Surgery. "And once a patient develops symptoms, the disease is usually metastatic, at which point, we don't have a reasonable expectation for cure."

That's why early detection is key Dr. Ebright says. And Stamford Hospital's lung cancer program , named a "screening center of excellence" by the Lung Cancer Alliance and most recently recognized by the American College of Radiology, is all about early detection. Using low-dose CT scanning to discover cancer in high-risk individuals, Stamford Hospital can even provide patients with same-day results.

Stamford hospital is also one of the only cancer programs in Fairfield County to offer a new procedure that can diagnose lung tumors using a telescope through the mouth, eliminating the need for incisions.

So who should be screened? Ebright says patients between the ages of 55 to 75 who have smoked the equivalent of one pack a day for 30 years and either quit within the last 15 years or are current smokers should be screened.

As part of Lung Cancer Awareness month, Stamford Hospital is inviting all U.S. veterans for a lung cancer risk assessment at the Tully Health Center, Saturday November 15. For more information about this, and other events, visit stamfordhospital.org
