Pink is everywhere around Greenwich to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Greenwich Hospital is also celebrating by sharing new advances in early detection of the cancer.

"3D mammography. It is the latest technology for breast imaging, and a huge advance," said Sarah Stewart, a Greenwich Hospital physician.

This machine takes one millimeter sweeps of the breast so doctors can look at the x-rays slice by slice.

"We are able to find cancers more easily, and we are finding a lot of really small cancers that we would have not picked up before," said Stewart.

Greenwich Hospital also has new advances in reconstructive surgery for mastectomy patients.

"We have a couple of options, either with implants or or with their own tissues using just the fat, which is very exciting. They have been improving the last few years," said Elsa Raskin, a plastic surgeon.

Doctors say that many women are unaware of their options when it comes to reconstructive surgery.

"It's very important that we tell them and keep them up to date with the latest advances," said Raskin.

Even with all these new advances in screening and reconstruction, doctors say that some women are hesitant to come in.

"Early detection is the best way to take care of any problem, if it should come up. Almost everybody has a good outcome," said Jan Larkin, a nurse navigator.

"Not knowing is worse than just having an exam that might be normal, or finding something early. The whole point of a screening is early detection," said Stewart.
