STAMFORD -- First Lady of Connecticut Cathy Malloy will speak in Stamford next month to stress the importance of funding the arts.
Malloy, Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Hartford Arts council, is the keynote speaker for the Loft Artists Association's first ever Art in Our Community event in September. She will present why the arts are essential for the well-being of a community and how the arts help build the identity of a city.
The Loft Artists Association is a nonprofit in Stamford made up of 40 professional artist members. It provides artists with a supportive environment that presents opportunities to exhibit their work and networking. As a cultural institute, the LAA offers artistic and educational opportunities to the public, free of charge, including its annual open studios event, community workshops lectures, tours of studios and galleries, and after school programs.
This summer, the LAA offered eight Saturday morning art workshops for children ages 7 to 14 at no cost. The summer program was supported by generous donations from sponsors and individuals who believe in the importance of artistic exposure.
The event, Art in Our Community, will feature cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and live music and is scheduled for Sunday, September 14 from 5 to 8 p.m. Proceeds from this event will help support the ongoing efforts of the LAA.
