This is the scene where Stamford police say a woman was hit by a car while crossing the street.  Police say she was walking at the intersection here at Hoyt and Summer St and was seriously injured after being hit by an SUV.

Police say the pedestrian suffered life threatening injuries and was taken to Stamford Hospital this afternoon.  The female driver was also taken to the hospital for observation.

Police say the SUV was coming down Summer and turning left on Hoyt.  That's when it struck the woman crossing the road. They say it's unclear if the woman was in the crosswalk with the cross signal.

UPDATE:

Stamford police are announcing this evening the 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe was driven by Norwalk resident Natalie Grainer, 49.  The pedestrian was identified as Stamford resident Janice Pielert, 58, who was brought to Stamford Hospital.  Police are now reporting Pielert has died from the injuries she sustained.

Police say the investigation is continuing and anyone who witnessed the incident is encouraged to contact the investigating officers: Officers Hugh Mullin or Ryan McAllister at 203-977-4712.
