"The names that are on the monument behind us; if it weren't for them, we wouldn't be here today," said Rep. Robert "Gabe" DeLuca, Grand Marshal for the 2014 Stamford Memorial Day Parade.

More than 40 veteran's groups and marching units came together Sunday afternoon for Stamford's Memorial Day Parade.

"Thank you for reminding us why we have this holiday. Thank you for reminding us what is important about the holiday and what's important about being an American," said Senator Richard Blumental.

Congressman Jim Himes said, "We're here on Memorial Day, previously known as Decoration Day to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and of course their children are still with us, their spouses, family and friends are still with us. So take a moment today not just to remember those we lost but to comfort those whose family gave the ultimate sacrifice to all of us."

Residents say they continue to come out every year to remember those who fought for our country

"All the men who have been in our army who fought for us and sacrificed so much. Family members losing them, barely ever seeing their family," said John Liberatore of Stamford.

"It's important so that he understands the sacrifices that our veterans have made, and people that aren't even enlisted. The family members, friends and relatives that don't have their loved ones with them today," said John's father John Liberatore who takes his son to every Memorial Day and Veterans' Day parade in Stamford.

Griffin Stover of Norwalk said, "Freedom isn't free and we're here to celebrate all the people who have died in the line of duty and the veterans for this great country."
