On Tuesday, April 15, the Mayor’s Office released a statement announcing the appointment of Ernie Orgera to Director of Operations for the City. Orgera had been serving as Acting Director in the Martin Administration since the Mayor took office on December 1, 2013.
Orgera began his career in 1970 with the Stamford Police Department, where he served for 20 years. Following his police service, Orgera became a Supervisor in the Department of Operations until his appointment in 2010 to Director of Operations. After taking office on December 1, Mayor Martin asked Orgera to serve in an interim capacity, and decided to appoint Orgera to serve as permanent Director following his leadership over the past four months.
Martin’s appointment comes following one of the worst winters on record, when Stamford experienced significant snowfall and several consecutive days of freezing temperatures, putting the Department under considerable stress to keep Stamford’s streets clean and safe. According to the release, Martin was impressed by Orgera’s experience and ability to manage the City’s operations both during the winter events and, now, as the City works to repair road damage.
“Ernie’s experience and knowledge has been an asset throughout the first months of my Administration and will be instrumental moving forward. I have discussed with Ernie some of the past practices of the Operations Department and have made it clear that the residents of Stamford and I expect the Department to maintain high standards. Ernie fully supports these standards, and is committed to working towards our shared vision of transforming the Department to improve service for residents and businesses and better use data and technology. I have every confidence that Ernie will continue to make significant contributions in the years to come,” Martin said.
Martin has submitted his appointment for consideration and approval by the Board of Representatives.
