"Reading to kids is one of the most important things we can do. It really helps build their vocabulary, gives them a lot of new experiences," said Mary Oster, Co-Chair of Norwalk's Early Childhood Council.

Early Years are Learning Years. That is what Norwalk's Early Childhood Council wants parents to know, as they get ready to celebrate children and those who make a difference in their lives.

"The importance of early childhood education; quality childhood education for all of our kids and it's also a way to honor our caregivers, whether they be teachers, parents or grandparents," said Oster.

April 5th through April 12th is Week of the Young Child, a national movement started by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Locally, the Early Childhood Council will kick of a week of celebration with Wellfest on Saturday.

"There will be a lot of things for the kids to do," Oster added. "Entertainment, free books, a make your own healthy snack station, lots of singing and dancing. It will be great."

In addition to Wellfest, children can also participate in several events throughout the week at the Norwalk Library, a book walk at City Hall and a healthy foods event at Fodor Farm.

"That will be a great way for kids to see the connection between planting and the table. Not all children realize how things get from the farm to their tables,"said Oster.
