They may only be in elementary school, but one of these junior chefs could be the next big thing in the cooking world.
"I love cooking and my mom and I cook all the time and it's just so much fun," said Sadie, a student in Chefology 102.
At Norwalk Public School's central kitchen, students in Whitsons Culinary and Norwalk Public Schools' Chefology courses are slicing and dicing their way to healthy meals.
Jill Kress, Executive Secretary of Norwalk Public Schools' Food Service Department and Chefology teacher said, "We are helping them make healthy choices for their bodies. We make a lot of healthy meals here and we want to show them that you can be the boss of what you eat. We really wanted to promote family time as well. We wanted to make sure that these kids are going home with their families and showing them what they did [in class].
"I like cooking because my mom always cooks and my dad always cooks so I thought it would be cool if I could learn how to cook and be just like them," said Jack, a student in Chefology 102.
Students in the program say learning a new dish in each class is exciting.
Justin, a Chefology 102 student said, "I like cooking because I like trying new foods, not just like chicken nuggets or pizza like most kids. I like pesto and crab and oysters and all the different foods."
"I love trying new foods. We made the guacamole dip and I tried that and I really like it," said Brynne, a Chefology 102 student.
With introductory, secondary and middle school courses, Kress says she hopes the program continues to grow and inspire kids to try new things.
"We really just want to show them new things and let them experiment with the new things. Try new stuff. If you don't like it great, but at least you tried it," said Kress.
