The Stamford Public Education Foundation honored those who make a difference in education in the Stamford community.

Monday, SPEF hosted its annual "Excellence in Education Awards" at UConn Stamford.  The foundation recognized Judy Martin for her hard work.  Martin is now in her eleventh year as a reading teacher at Northeast Elementary School.

"I'd like to recognize the people here today who teach children, who mentor children," said Judy Martin, "Who have been teachers or have been mentors."

She and her husband David Martin, Mayor of Stamford, founded Starfish Connection, a nonprofit that aims to close the achievement gap for low income children in the city.  There are currently 36 third to night grade children enrolled.

"I am very proud that you have received this honor tonight," said Mayor David Martin to his wife Judy.  "It's well deserved and I thank you, SPEF, for recognizing it."

The foundation also presented a mentoring award to youth mentor Diane Hubbard.  RBS, also recognized for its commitment to volunteerism and education.

SPEF supports students and teachers in Stamford's Public Schools.  At the elementary level, the nonprofit provides literacy initiatives and offers college and career readiness at the middle and high school levels.
