The City of Stamford released crime data showing a 3.5 % decline in crime for the first half of 2013 in comparison to the same time period in 2012. The data was collected by the Stamford Police Department and verified and published by the FBI.

According to the city’s release, Stamford is distinguished as being the safest city in Connecticut and New England. The next-safest city in Connecticut has more than twice Stamford’s crime rate. According to FBI data, for the first half of 2013, Stamford’s crime rate ranked 16th of cities with over 100,000 residents.

“I am pleased to see that crime is down in Stamford and that we continue to be the safest city in New England. It is a testament to the tremendous work of our public safety officials and the work they do each and every day to protect our residents,” said Mayor Martin.

“Police Chief Fontneau and I use these statistics to constantly assess areas for improvement,” said Director of Public Safety, Health and Welfare Ted Jankowski. “While the report showed a meaningful decline in crime in 2013, we did experience increases in robbery and burglary, which we will be monitoring and focusing on in the coming year. Overall, the report and our data analysis show that we are moving in the right direction and remain one of the safest communities in the country.”

The Mayor and Police Department plan to expand the City’s collection and analysis of crime data.

“One of my priorities is to make our city more data-driven. Tracking and analyzing crime is a key component of that,” Martin said.

National data was published by the FBI for January to June of 2013 and can be accessed here. Data from the full calendar year 2013 is expected to be released by the FBI in December 2014. The Police Department plans to release the FBI’s 2013 ranking once it becomes available later this year.
