An exhibition featuring quilts made by Hamilton Avenue School 3rd grade classes opened at the Greenwich Historical Society.

"The Hamilton Avenue Quilt Partnership Exhibition celebrates five years of working with the 3rd grade class at Hamilton Avenue," said Anna Greco, Curator of Education at the Greenwich Historical Society. "They [the students] come to the site to learn about Sarah Bush and her family who lived here through the American Revolution into the New Nation period and then they draw these squares based off of the different rooms that they see in the house."

The multi-layered project with the school began with an actor coming into the classrooms as Sarah Bush, the students then visited the home of Sarah Bush at the Greenwich Historical Society, and then created images of the different rooms to serve as a colorful reminder of all that they learned.

"One of the major goals for this partnership is for the students to learn about their own community to recognize Greenwich as their home and a little bit of their own identity," said Greco. "It's very important to know where you're from to understand where you're going."

By creating a quilt students learned about the importance of this historical craft and individual panels on the quilts offer vivid interpretations of what students saw and studied.

"Each square tells a story, so the quilts are artistic but they are also narrative," said Greco.

In the exhibition there are 14 quilts from the school and one quilt from the Historical Society's collection. The exhibition is running through March 16th and all students, staff and alumni of Hamilton Avenue are invited to visit the exhibition for free.
