Conrad Birdie is coming to Greenwich. The Boys and Girls Club of Greenwich held their first night of auditions for Bye Bye Birdie on Thursday night.
Rocco Natale, Artistic Producer of the main stage production said, "Last year we did Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella which is such a great show and a totally different kind of show. We've done princess musicals for two years in a row so we wanted to go back to kind of classic American musical theater and a rock and roll show. It's our first rock and roll show ever."
After the success of Cinderella in May, the club chose a musical with a different sound as their spring production.
Natalie Anibal, who has been a part of the theater program at the Boys and Girls Club of Greenwich for several years said, "We did a lot of princess and Disney things and I think we are moving on from that. Now that the theater program is blossoming into this huge thing, we're really starting to get a huge amount of kids doing it, it's great. So I think it's going to be an even better show."
Natale added, "What's really exciting is our kids will be get to use new tools and new strengths that we haven't really been able to access before with the different kinds of shows we've done."
Club members say the theater program is important to the kids both on stage and backstage
Matheus Chavez, who has been a part of the stage crew during past production, stepped up to audition for the rock and roll musical. Chavez said, "It's just another art form that the kids can express themselves. They really have fun. You can see their smiles backstage, they are enjoying it when they are practicing and they are in to it and dedicated to really making the show successful."
The second day of auditions will take place at the Boys and Girls Club of Greenwich on Friday, December 13th at 6:00 pm. Bye Bye Birdie is set to open on May 2, 2014.
