Students at Brunswick School helped Family Centers kick off the holiday giving season Friday with a donation of Thanksgiving baskets.
"They have been a partner with us for five years on this adventure, and I think we started out with maybe 25 meals and this year between Brunswick and some other community partners we are going to be providing at least 100 meals to families in the Greenwich and Stamford area," says Jennifer Flatow, Director of Community Engagement at Family Centers.
The Thanksgiving baskets include nonperishable items and a gift certificate to the family's local grocery store to encourage the family to put their own creative spin on their meal.
"Our community friends are putting together all the fixings for our Thanksgiving dinner: nonperishable food items including a roasting pan, and they provide a gift certificate to a local grocery store," says Flatow. "The family who receives the basket is able to go out and purchase their main dish, whether it be a turkey or something else."
The students of Brunswick School assembled 171 baskets to be donated to partner organizations throughout the community.
"We thank our lucky stars every day but we are also aware of what is around us, and so there are, throughout community service, through student government, throughout the school, a number of clubs who do charitable work every single day," says Johnny Montanez, Director of Community Service at Brunswick School. "So we just want to make our boys aware of real need, and not just show up, but actual perform the service that is needed for the organization."
Family Centers also wants to remind organizations that families are in need all year, not just during the Holidays.
"While it's wonderful for us to collect food this time of year, it's important for people to always remember that there are food pantries that need to be stocked all year long and we would really like to impress upon them to just give when they can and as they can," says Flatow.
