The Greater Norwalk Chamber of Commerce brought together business leaders, employees and members of the United Way at Beiersdorf in Wilton Thursday night to talk goals in community growth and philanthropy with Bill Graham.
Graham is the President of Beiersdorf USA and the 2013 United Way Campaign Chair.
Beiersdorf is a global skincare company that has been supplying brands like Nivea, Eucerin, and Aquaphor since the 1920's. Graham says with its connection to philanthropic services through the United Way, the company has continuously been able to engage employees in giving back.
"Another really important pillar for our organization is the fact that we care for our environment and we care for our communities," said Graham. "So most of the stuff that we do within our organization is very much employee-led and employee driven."
The United Way is a national system of volunteers, contributors, and local charities dedicated to helping people in their own communities. Members of the Coastal Fairfield County chapter say their main focus in Norwalk is to help needy children and families prepare and get through school.
"This area, which happens to be a very wealthy area is also an area where believe it or not, we have the biggest gap between achievements and education and what we're really working on is how do we close that gap, the gap was the biggest here of any gap that exists in the country."
"There's a big homeless population in Coastal Fairfield County," said Merle Berke-Schlessel. "And we're working on eliminating that population and supporting that population, so they can find permanent supportive housing and everything we can do to help kids and their families succeed."
