A group of students from Stark Elementary spruced up the front of their school Wednesday to honor veterans. The Brownie Troop planted patriotic trees around Veteran’s Rock to beautify the tribute and create a resting place for plants and animals.
“We, every year, do a big celebration at Veterans Day and at Flag Day and the Veteran’s Rock was very plain and simple so Stephanie came with the idea that the Brownie Troop could help out and that this would be a service project to help them get a badge,” says Ann Zorn, special education teacher and garden club head at Stark Elementary School.
“I think it’s very important for the girls to learn at an early age how much it means to help out in your community,” says Brownie Troop Leader Stephanie Fitzgerald. “I also think they need to understand and respect the service that people give us who are in the armed services.”
“They protected our country,” says one troop member.
“They planted, to make it a patriotic garden; if you start to the far right they have blue hydrangea, in the middle is a dwarf birch tree to represent white, and then all the way to the far left is a red dogwood tree,” says Zorn.
