On Wednesday, September 11, Northeast School held an outdoor ceremony in memory of the victims of 9/11. Dr. Connie Stevenson, Principal of Northeast, organized the ceremony for the school’s 700 students. Fourth grade student Olivia Ciokajlo opened the ceremony. The guest speaker was Lorraine Olson, Vice President of the Board of Education. Olson was the school nurse in the building when the 9/11 tragedy occurred.
The school's Parent-Teacher Organization purchased 11 bushes, which were planted in a row next to a 9/11 memorial plaque sign. Grade 4 students Deborah Desyr, Noelle Giordano and Meredith DiGiacomo sang the National Anthem, and the following eleven students stood before each bush and spoke a salute to the victims: Lania Williams – “Caring”; Cole Glatzhofer- “Gallant”; Emma Romaine-“Diligence”; Gideon Reddick – “Perseverance”; Sean Perry- “Fearless”; Haivynn Kovach-“Heroic”; Joey Giambalvo-“Courageous”; Kyle Orr-“Driven”; Ruben Robles-“Strength”; Shayla Pensiero-“Bravery”; Emma Ronaghan-“Committed”. The entire school body circled the memorial for the ceremony.
