Seniors sang out in joy at the Grass Island Boat and Yacht Club for the Family Centers' Friendly Connections' Annual Summer Luncheon on Thursday.
With the help of local participants from UBS and Atria Senior Livings, nearly 100 seniors and volunteers had the chance gather for an afternoon of fun and socialization.
"It's very important to help seniors in leading an independent life and helping them be successful wherever they're at, whether they're in an Atria property or another senior property or in their homes with the help of friendly connections," said Atria Senior Livings Community Sales Director Vanessa Vecchio.
Coordinators say it's rare opportunity for homebound and isolated seniors to get together with the friends they’ve made over the phone.
"We have friendly callers, friendly visitors as well as teleconference courses over the phone," said Family Centers Coordinator Allison Petro. "So a lot of our participants know each other over the phone, but they don't have the opportunity to get together on a regular basis and socialize and actually be together in person versus over the phone."
Greenwich Senior Center Vocal Group, The Silvertones, has been performing locally around the area for nearly 30 years.
"They're very feisty," said Pamela Kuhn. "They're all performers, they love to sing and they love to get out of the community and serve the community with their voices."
For the fifth year about 12 employees from UBS volunteered their services, while Atria Senior Living provided lunch.
"It's helping those who aren't able to be in a community or in their homes and this is that one time of year where they get together face to face and interact," said Vecchio.
Family Centers is a private, nonprofit organization offering education and human services to children, adults and families in Fairfield County.
"I've had a number of people tell me, it doesn't even feel like I'm volunteering anymore," said Petro. "I've genuinely made a friendship with one of the participants."
