Saturday June 8, 2013 is Open House Day in Connecticut. Locally, there is hope Saturday could mean good things for the Gallaher Estate at Cranbury Park.
"There's a lot of activity here and we want to keep that going," says Mark Berns, president of the Friends of Cranbury Park.
Berns says the Gallaher Estate is in need of repair.
"The gutters need work, there's some drainage issues," he says. "Ultimately, the electric and the plumbing needs to be upgraded."
But to get it done, there needs to be money. Most of the money the estate generates comes from weddings and parties hosted there.
"If can generate a lot of interest, we can drum up enough to hopefully get the funding," Berns says.
Berns says the repairs would cost roughly $3 million to $4 million. To get that money, he says people need to use the property.
"[We need to] develop a lot of public interest in it," he says. "The mansion is a great resource, a great asset to the community and the city."
The estate open house will run from noon to 4 p.m. Also in Norwalk, the adjacent Carriage House Arts Center will be open, as will the Lockwood Mathews Mansion.
