New Neighborhoods Inc. hosted it's 6th annual Champions of Housing Luncheon Wednesday, honoring yet another person who has been instrumental in providing affordable housing to families in need. Stamford resident Dahlia Johnston, known as Pobie Johnston, was chosen as this year's honoree for her 50 plus years dedicated to this effort.
Johnston says there has always been a need for affordable housing. She says once she took an interest in it, she never looked back. Johnston has spent about 20 years volunteering with New Neighborhoods, and has been a part of many Stamford projects, including the revitalization of downtown. Despite much doubt from the public, Johnston says the project moved forward.
Emmy award winning journalist j and talk show host Janus Adams was the featured speaker the ceremony. Adams says most working families are denied the stability of decent housing because they aren't getting paid enough.
Johnston is currently serving on the board of the housing development fund and involved with many other community projects.
